Spend you money on something GOOD. A new computer will be wonderful.

If you are still running Windows 98 (NOT 98SE) then forget any USB products. All versions of Windows before 98SE do not support USB ports. You do not have any USB ports on your computer anyway. You need a SCSI PCMCIA card to add an external CD-ROM. Then you need a external SCSI case and SCSI CD-ROM drive. I have this setup for systems like yours when I have to work on them. You are better off looking on eBay for a docking station for this model.

I'm not sure this computer is worth the effort and expense. I found several examples of these on the net and none are valued more than $70.

If it is that old then don't worry about which CD Drive it will still outcompete your laptop in performance providing it has a port for a CD Drive to connect to.
My advice and seemingly everyone elses is to scrap the computer it's junk.

Chuck the laptop and get a new notebook which is more contemporary, if not powerful.

A long time has passed since computers have stopped coming with fitter floppy drives.

Your laptop is grossly obsolete

For the price that you'd pay for an external drive, you might as well just start investing in a newer low-end laptop.

I don't think anything is compadable with your laptop. If it doesn't have a cd drive then it probably doesn't have USB which is what you'd have to use. Goto circuit city and buy a new laptop.

If you go onto HP's website, you can probably chat with a rep. who can tell you if or not they have one that is compatable. Or just go to Best Buy or Circuit City and take the lap-top with you, and they will do the work; you just make the purchase.
