I thought it was worth it. I bought all 3 extended films. If you are looking for in depth extra stuff like Tom (I forget his name but the guy in the first book that sings to the trees) then it's not worth it.. but in the first one, a lot more is shown about Galadrial and what she gives each of the Fellowship Members... The Two Towers actually shows the trees at the end of the battle at Helms Deep destroying the Orcs as they run away and shows more scenes with Eowyn and Aragorn - one where he says he's 87 ... and then the third one explains more w/ Faramir and Boromir, the cursed that Aragorn gets to fight w/ him ... and much more .. but there are also scenes w/ Aragorn and Arawen and both Sauraman and Wormtongue's death that is completely Peter Jackson ... there is not battle in the shire even in the extended version which is pretty sad ... so I hope this helps your decision! HA! I'd say if you don't have the money, it's not worth it right now, but save up or ask for them for Bdays and Christmas ...or are there even newer extended versions and I don't know what I'm talking about?

There is a newer extended version than what went out already?

The extended versions are well worth it, as it gives greater detail and motivation to the characters.

"Return of the King" is absolutely stunning, as you see the death of Sarumon, the struggle of Aragorn withe the King of the Dead and the battle sequences are unbelievable.

(This is one reason I waited for the incredible box set. Well worth the money)

Yes, very worth it indeed.

Not only you get the extra segments which help fill some background on the storty, there are hours worth of extras about how the films were made

I love the LOTR movies and I did enjoy watching the extended editions. Personally I prefer the DVDs that have both theatrical and extended versions because sometimes I just wanna watch the cut down version. That may just be me Idk.

So worth it. They're better than the not-extended versions...

Well I think it's worth it. I think it explains a little bit more for those who haven't read the book.
