I can't believe some of the answers here! You are right about the sinks draining clockwise etc. At a very fine band arounp the equator the water drains straight down the plug hole. Just ignore the other rubbish here.

The Coriolanus effect creates the different rotations in the northern and southern hemisphere. It caused by the rotation of the earth but is a very small force compared to gravity. Only in large systems (hurricanes) does it always prevail. In small systems (tubs, toilets, and sinks), the drain pipe configuration can change the rotation. So not all drains in the north hemisphere rotate counter-clockwise and the rotation would be random at the equator.

Well, there is such a thing as the Coriolis effect. It explains why macroevents such as hurricanes rotate in a clockwise direction in the Southern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. However, when you get down to itty-bitty phenomena such as the water draining out of your bathtub, the Coriolis effect is insignificant, amounting to roughly three ten-millionths of the force of gravity (in Boston, at least, which is where they happened to do the measuring).

The boring truth is that water drains every which way no matter what hemisphere you're in, for reasons which have to do mostly with the shape of the drain, the way you poured in the water in the first place, and so on.

They overflow into your bathroom for asking that question! In the Northern Hemisphere they always end up at george w. bushes mouth so make sure you flush twice because it may be some distance away from you!

At least according to Brainiac on Sky TV in the UK, it all remains the same regardless of the hemisphere.

However, knowing that said TV show has lied about experiments on enough occasions, i am going to "take" their findings at an arms length...
