the two different meanings of the word:
Armageddon - The scene of a final battle between the forces of good and evil, prophesied to occur at the end of the world. final conflict between Christ and Antichrist. The idea of such a scene was
suggested by the Old Testament great battle-field, the plain of Esdraelon (The Bible)

Armageddon - A decisive or catastrophic conflict in which mankind is the cause of the end of the world. They called the first World War an Armageddon and the turn of the century 2000 (the millenium) an Armageddon.

Armageddon, the idea that mankind will bring his own end always seems possible. The thought of Christ and Antichrist, that depends on what you believe, if you believer in a religion then there are many questions to ask, if you look at these subjects as a metaphor, then the answer is simple , there will never be an end .
good and bad are part of life's equation that we/mankind have created to help us understand the unknown, look back into history there has never been a change in human nature, materialistically we may have advanced a little but human nature is inherent in our being, the only way to change human nature is by self control, and how do you teach that to a child?
or by some mutation of our DNA that eliminates our psychopathic tendencies.
there is more . If you do or do not believe in an omnipotence/divine being etc then look at the scientific answer the Sun will one day die/become a supernova we on this planet would be extinguished/dead, but that is some 5billion years away; so they say. we could always be hit by a huge meteor that could bring the end . From this I think that we should look to understand our importance in the grand scheme of things. If you believe that when you are dead that you go on to some higher plane/whatever, then there is a problem for people think that their sins will be forgiven again it is what you believe that will i think in the end destroy us, this may be a a priori but the facts are there in front of us. Space is an absolute for it cannot be destroyed.
all the best

the mayan and hopi prophesy was for the year 2012, incidently so was nostradamus. the jews believe it's when the 3rd temple of jerusalem is built. interestingly both the mayans and the jews have present day humans as being evolved in the year 3763bc, give or take 30yrs, which coincides with the building of both stonehenge, skala brae and the great pyramid. almost as if an intelligent species was put on earth or was transported from an alien planet to a distant prison where they could kill each other and create an armageddon, out of danger to other more respectful life forms. the planet is 450 million years old but only has a creative/intelligent history for the last 6,000 years. i believe we are outcasts just as the english sent all the convicts to australia.

Forget the book of Revelations. The final chapter of the New Testament has no relevence in the present since it is all code for early Christians. For instance that whole "mark of the beast 666" actually refers to the initials of the then current emperor, a secret way of saying "look out for that guy!" It is just the venting of frustrations through symbolism of an oppressed people.

The end of the world is a personal event that occurs to everyone, it is usually called death. When and where... that is not for you to know.

I don't believe in a fight between the "Forces of Good and Evil". That's just a method of mind control for the masses.

However, humans will run out of time on this planet (possibly within the next century if our populations keep increasing at the exponential rate that they are now) when our natural resources become depleted. At that point we'll hopefully already be travelling to the far off galaxies, populating and eventually polluting those planets. Without the natural resources needed to shape our environment it's all over.

Armageddon is a belief, not a philosophy.
The fact that a bunch of fanatics believe it and work towards making it happen should be seen as a mental illness, not a religion or philosophy.

The fact is that population density produces stress and alters our behaviour. Malthus demonstrated this in the 1700's.
The sad fact that violent and aggressive individuals work for their own ends shouldn't surprise us. It shouldn't be viewed as normal behaviour.

that's way too deep to contemplate, but I would be more certain of Amrageddon being caused by pollution and this is the decisive and catestrophic conflict which mankind has caused... a conflict with nature.

That, plus the sun is getting bigger and will supernova one day...

We "Homo Sapiens" [ ;) no offence taken on that point at all... hi hi] will be extinct anyhow.. so what difference will it make?

A much better description of Armageddon is in the new testament (Revelations). Where God will using his heavenly army will destroy wicked and put Satan in abyss for one thousand years. Thats what bible teaches. and only God know when this day will come, not even Jesus or angels.

A catastrophic event hits the world, wiping all living souls on it. Then it gets to start all over again. It happens before and history will repeat itself. So live good and live well :-)
