This is only based on my own experiences, having lived in the big cities and small towns. Crime exists everywhere you go; it doesn't matter whether it's in the city or a small town. We live in a small town and there have been murders, beatings, theft, and vandalism - just like in a city.
Living in a city can afford some anonymity, whereas living in small towns tends towards the "everybody knows everybody" type scenario. Rumours spread more quickly in small towns than cities, but that depends on the people there too.
Personally, I prefer living in our small town because if we run out of, say, milk or coffee, it takes much less time to walk the distance to the store than in a city. Less traffic too, although our town is a thoroughfare for some of the major festivals, powows and other events. It's a matter of preference, I guess, and what ultimately suits the person.

I've lived in both.
If you're single, living in a small town can be downright hell.
Growing up in a small town, I was SO thankful to come of age during the internet, since I didn't like to date in my own town! Small towns can be very conservative, so unless you're the very conventional type, as a younger person, they're not the greatest places to live.
Big cities offer a ton of dating choices, especially with the internet. Also more career oppurtunities than that insurance call center and the local hospital.
Regardless of where you live, safety depends on the neighborhood to a large degree. I think that the types of crime committed are different, too. It shocked me to look on city-data.com and see that my small hometown had almost as much crime as Buffalo, NY!! Also, on criminalcheck.com, I found more sex offenders in my old hometown than in Buffalo....
Really, check the statistics of the individual city and neighborhood before deciding to make a decision about crime.

I have lived in both the big city and a small town. I grew up in the Minneapolis/St Paul, Mn and I now live in Upper Michigan in small town of Escanaba. There are both Ups and Downs about living in both places. Living in the big city is nice at times because there are more things to do, but then there is the safety issue, here in Escanaba the crime rate is pretty low. I feel safe raising my kids here, but I find they lack a lot of common knowledge. Small town kids are pretty naive at times, but that isn't always a bad thing. I would say I wouldn't raise my kids in a big city, but if I were single and lived alone I would prefer the big city over this small boring town.

I would take a big city in a second. More jobs, more entertainment, more opportunity. Naturally, wherever there is a large amount of people, there will be crime, but rather than wasting away in a small town it is better to live life to the fullest in a city.

I think I would prefer a big city. Yes, a small city does not have crime.. but eventually you'll have to leave your city in search of greener pastures... and the sooner you learn about "real life" the better. The big city has much more opportunity as well.

If you're young and career oriented, live in a big city coz thats where the money is. But if you want to slow down and raise a family or retire then its better to live in a small town.

Depends. If you like you're privacy, if you like to be anonymous, stay in the city. If you're willing to deal with the busybodies in order escape the crime, then move to a small town. That said, not all small towns are crime free.

having already done both in my life, I prefer a small town, there IS less crime, its closer knit, there is more support when things go bad, quieter, slower paced, kids are safer playing in the streets, you can hang your washing on the clothes line without fear of it being stolen, your homes are safer, the air is cleaner and smells so much sweeter what more can you ask for.....
The only downside to living in a small town is that there is less employment, fewer education options, less healthcare assurance, and people tend to be much nosier, and will have you outcasted if there is something that they dont like about you or your family......and that can be a very lonely existance as well.
