As long as you save your work into a file ( File-save)
and close your applications down (file-exit/close). Yes it's safe to shut your computer down and turn off the monitor. It will give you computer a chance to cool down as well.

Ok...here is the real deal. It will definately NOT hurt anything if you shut it down each night.

But, it will probably NOT hurt anything if you leave it on either. My computer stays on....and I mean STAYS ON all day, every day of the year...even if I am away from home on holidays etc. and I dont have any problems. I have been using and building PC's for over 20 years and I can tell you that for all of my computers, it has MADE NO DIFFERENCE.

In fact, some people believe that shutting down and starting up again can cause enough of a change in temperature to actually hurt some components if it happens often enough. In other words, by leaving it on (or off) the temp remains fairly constant and doesnt affect the components inside the machine as much.

It is bad to be constantly turning the system on and off, but if it is going to
be unused for more than an hour, shut it down.

The wear and tear of it being up for that hour exceeds the damage done
by spinning up the disk drive when you boot, etc.

CRT style monitors perhaps have a slightly different trade off point.
That is, if it is going to be used again in less than 4 to 6 hours don't shut it
off. LCD monitors should be shot off just like the rest of the computer.

They do waste a small amount of electricity and they add needless
noise and heat to a room.

From my understanding, the circuits in PC's are sort of like the lightbulb. Turning it on and off is more detrimental to the properties of the metal in circuits than leaving it on due to the constant temp change of hot and cold when turning it off and on. I leave mine on 24/7 as a lot of people do and after 3 years, still going strong.

Yes you can shut it down, but most professional facilities leave them all 24/7, and I leave mine on, only turning off the monitor. Most of my problems have occurred when booting up.

Most people shut it down. It certainly doesn't hurt it and it might keep it from getting a virus from being exposed constantly on a web broadband link.

first of all you have to ask your computer if it likes it to be shut down, if it says no, then you should tell it it's disturbing your sleep, and keeping it on waste energy, if it says yes, then say thanks to it and give it a salute then move the mouse pointer (i am assuming it's a PC using windows XP) to the star and click on it choose tunr off button and then choose turn off again, then wait till it's fully tunred off. pull the plug out if you wish, and turn off the main electricity supply even better but becarful when you woke up to go to the toilet, remember to put a torch beside your pillow. best wishes^^

My computer is off whenever I go to bed and no problem rebooting the next day. So my opinion is it should be OK unless there is any system problem in your start up.
