It depends a bit where you live, but I guess in most places it would be fine.

I am currently in india where I am seeing so much poverty that I am having to rethink what is good. I think if you have a roof over your head, adequate food , enough clothing , enough to educate your family , enough for a reasonable amount of entertainment, transportation .taxes. The necessities of life basically plus saving between 10 to 20 percent of your income for example for a rainy day and some to help those less fornuate that is enough. Beyond that is greed. That is such a flexible variable that it can only be done location by location as housing food basic costs change from place to place.

Well, it really depends on what commitments you have, and what you need/want to do with your money. At the end of the day, while it is good to save for the future, there are no guarantees in life. You could earn 100k a year, save three quarters of that, and die at the age of 30, never having reaped the rewards. Alternatively, you could earn 35k a year, blow every cent on mind blowing experiences like holidays, gifts for loved ones, concerts and dinner parties, and die of old age, leaving little/nothing behind, but regretting nothing. For argument sake, let's leave the philosophy out of it, and say that you take your minimum monthly financial commitments, times that by 2.5, and that is a good pay.

A lot of people would gladly swap jobs with you for $5k a month. That would easily put you in the top 50% of U.S. households, even without any income by a spouse.
