They vary based on the airport and vigilance of the TSA scanners. In general - no weapon like stuff including scissors, and little knives on toenail clippers! Now they do not allow any beverages, tooth pastes, creams, or anything that could be a hidden plastic explosive or chemical. You can take a laptop computer, IPOD, cell phone etc. The less you take the easier it is.

Update for Travel within the United States:
Liquids and Gels Prohibited in Carry-On Baggage
August 14, 2006 – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced it will permit small does of liquid medications through the security checkpoint and onboard airplanes, a refinement from the original ban, implemented August 10. TSA will also now require all passengers to remove their shoes so they may be X-rayed with their carry-on bags to enhance efficiency in the screening process and eliminate confusion for travelers.
Travelers will continue to see an increase in visibility and use of canine detection teams. Random gate inspections and bag searches will continue.
Cabin baggage MUST NOT contain:
Any cosmetics
Any toiletries
Any liquids
Any drinks
However, cabin baggage CAN contain the following:
Electronic equipment, including laptops, mobile phones and portable music and DVD players,
Prescribed medicines in liquid form e.g. diabetic medicines
Baby milk and liquid baby food (the contents of each bottle MUST be tasted by the parent)
