Remember that many other people will be in the same situation, scared, anxious, alone. Many other people will be looking to make new friends so while this may be harder if you're shy, try to talk to some people in your living surroundings or in your classes (for example as you're sitting around waiting for a lecture to start). If you're in the same class with someone it means that you share something (either that you're all in your first year or you have an interest in the course) so there should be opportunities to discuss something.

Transitions always take a while so recognize that you may not be completely adjusted by the end of the first few weeks, but that does not mean that you won't like it in the long run.

Also, be sure to stay in touch with loved ones from home for support, but not so much as to make it impossible to get to know people in your new surroundings.

To be honest, it's probably not going to be fantastic for the first few weeks as you adjust and start to fit in. But if you go with an open mind and just try and be as relaxed as possible, you will definitely enjoy it. It will probably boost your self-confidence too, so look forward to this new part of your life!

good for you, you should pursue your dream and make new friends. the more friends you know, the more confident you will be. if you continue to be in your comfort zone, then you may not have the confident to be an art graduate. have you spoken to "art-ty" people before? well, i feel that most of them are full of confident in their work and themselves. don't worry, you can do it because you can see that you have good friends back home, and will always know that you have family and old friends to fall back on.

I have a doctorate and have been to many schools - try it this way:

you're on a great adventure.
take advantage of school and extracurricular activities.
be open, make more friends.
Write home - email is great these days for staying in touch.
insist that the fam and friends send you pix to stay more in touch.
ENJOY! the world is your oyster, my love. Eat well, party, and study. balance, balance, balance!
