Can anyone tell me about Calgary, AB? What is it like there? What is the crime like there? Is rent expensive compared to Ontario? Are there alot of jobs available? What about cities outside of Calgary? What are they like? Is Calgary hard to get around by car? How much are cigarettes out there right now? Where are some areas to stay away from when looking up apartments? Is it true alot of jobs pay $13 and hour and up? Is the cost of living high?

Thanks :D:D

I just left Calgary for Europe. I hated it. It is a very depressing place. It has gotten really expensive. It is super hard to find an apartment. There are lots of jobs but they seem to treat people like crap. Even though some places are paying high it isn't enough. I was making 22/hr and lived with my husband who was also working and we lived alright but we couldn't save. We never would have been able to afford a house. Plus Calgary has sooo many bums. It is descusting. Lots of drug dealers everywhere. I couldn't walk anywhere with out getting bugged for spare change. The traffic is really bad. Stay away from the NE all together. It is where all the gangs are. Bridgelands is okay though but expensive. Just south of downtown isn't too bad. There are lots of Vietnamese gangs now. I just don't like it there. I would rather live in Ontario. Less dumb red necks. They have some culture. Oh, the other thing about Calgary is the service is horrible. People don't care and are very rude. We live in Copenhagen now which is supposed to be about the 3rd most expensive city in the world and we are living better on one salary then we were in Calgary.

Calgary is a great city... Alberta is great, I can hardly imagine living anywhere else. A lot of companies treat you very well right now, depending on what you work at I guess, because demand for workers is so high. it's ridiculous how much money is here. If you CAN'T get a job here, there's something seriously wrong with you. McDonald's is starting at like $9 and hour or something. Compared to other cities, like Vancouver and Toronto, housing is not expensive, but it is rising. I think the average house price in Calgary is between $350 and $400,000. Vacancy is low, so is unemployment. The NE is the worst part of the city. Not a very dangerous city I don't think, compared to Van or Toronto... though my car DID get broken into on the weekend when I left it parked downtown overnight. I think we have a fairly good transit system. Lots of transit. The city is sprawled out far... not very high but a very spatially large city. We are an hour away from the mountains which is great... there's lots of good camping in Alberta, some nice lakes. People are pretty friendly everywhere I think. We get chinook's in the winter, so there's lots of warm days. But the weather can also completely change in 15 minutes. Don't know how much cigarettes are but Calgary is going smoke free in Jan 2007, whatever that means. Anyways, great city, I don't know what they hell you all are talking about.

Calgary is an oil city, and just hit one million people. It's a city that has grown very quickly because of the oil boom. Because of that, prices for housing, both buying and renting, are very high, as has the general cost of living. There are a lot of jobs in the service industry available - not sure about other areas. There is a city called Edmonton a few hours north of it - a very nice city. Calgary has an amazing zoo! I wouldn't want to live in Calgary; if I had to move to Alberta, I'd choose somewhere like Lethbridge or Red Deer. Do some googling on Calgary. If you're a guy with a trade, consider the oil patch up north, though housing there is absolutely through the roof - and people are even paying rent to sleep on someone's living room couches!
