You need to find work you love. Work shouldn't be a burden, something hated. It's a myth that retirement is bliss.
Work can be fulfilling and engaging. It SHOULD be these things.
Check out the books below, you might even find them at your local library.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but you have to work if you do not have the means t o make yourself independant . On the other hand there is hope that you can change all that. Grab some financial books from the nearest library and you can get the ideas on how to change all that. a few that I recommend are THe Wealthy Barber and The Frugal Tightwad vol 1 2 3 the latter tell how to live on a limited budget and stretch a dollar which may let you reach your goal soon than if you just used the ideas in the first which tells how to save enough to retire well or early. The next thing I would suggest is that you think about changing jobs. I hate to think of you not enjoying life while you are chasing your dreams. I speak from experience I worked 3 years as a secretary and hated every minute of it was very depressed all the time . I took a job as a telemarketer loved it and could not wait to get out of bed to go to work because I had so much fun. If you do not have the skills to change jobs get up 1 to 2 hours a day to learn new skills or follow your dreams. Another method to get more cash might be to work at another part time job in the evenings and/or weekend and invest that money to build up a nest egg to allow you to retire in 5 to 10 years. ie sell Avon , Regal, Mary Kay, Tupperware, vacuums .
Another thing start doing something on a regular basis so that you can start to enjoy your life learn to juggle, face paint origami then entertain at birthday parties. Start writing a novel if you want
Take painting classes. Work out a comedy routine try out for a stand up comic role at a comedy club. Go bird watching. Form a book club, a thrift club a comedy club a writer's club. Learn to sew knit fix cars woodworking Belly dancing . learn a new language of a country you really want to visit so you will be able to speak to the natives when you have saved enough money. Get a group together to go walking , jogging daily. Learn about the stock market invest in some secure companies. Have fun and try to do 3 or more things each day that give you pleasure. You are much too young to not enjoy life and be sick of work. If you are sick of work that is a clear clue it is time to change jobs to something that will satisfy you . Here's looking at you kid . Set the alarm to watch the sunrise tomorrow morning and realize that you are in the sunrise stage of your life. Make a list of 100 things you want to accomplish before you die then start enjoying doing them

Retiring is not an option for you. You don't have enough money and people's retirement income is supposed to last the rest of thier life so forget it, it's out of the question.
Your only options are to work from home or find a job with alot of of time off and good hours that allow you to enjoy life, such jobs include teaching, alot of time off and nurses can work 3 12hr shifts a week, you need to looking into things like that, I don't know what you're specialized in but those are the only logical choices.
Marrying a rich man is not a logical option. They see women coming for them miles away and unless you're in love or have genuine feelings for them being married to some old prune for money and financial support is like a fulltime 24/hr 7 day job with no vacations, you're better off with a job.

Have you looked into working from home as an extra source of income. If you're good at it you can create multiple streams of income on autopilot. Put in the initial work and then sit back and enjoy some extra profits every month. I know some retired people do it so they're not living just on retirement - maybe it would fit your situation. -- Who knows you might like it, be successful at it and become a WAHM and spend all your time with your kids and your weekends traveling. Just a thought.

You are still young at 40 unless you have loads of money then you can talk of retiring. Seems you are not enjoying your present work. Why not look for work that you like. Otherwise you are going to land nowhere but a pauper.

we all would like to retire when we feel like not working anymore . you need to work to collect a pension or social security . you should be happy that you are healthy enough to work , that's enjoyment enough . i had to quit work after 15 years due to health problems , and i have been retired for 1 month and it's driving me crazy . everyone i know is working , doing things together i use to do and having fun . sort of like what high school drop outs feel . just keep working , you won't be 40 forever ,. enjoy your life and heath while you still can . build up your SSI and pension .. good luck !

Yeh I agree... there is no easy way out. Aside marrying a guy to take care of you. Pick a new career. 40 is really young to be retiring.. geezas... you just got out of your 30's for petes sakes. Hehe. Just find a new career and save 12 % of your wages in a 401k or buy stocks, Oil stocks will be good for years. I started saving in a 401k 5 years ago, now I have $90,000.
I would say you have 25 more years of workin ahead of you.. so get to it....

Marry a guy who has money. Can't think of any other way to do it, unless you have money in the bank.
