A stuffed animal because pets are alive. The feel all that we feel. When a small child does not understand, they can easily hurt an animal. The animal will suffer, possible broken bones and maybe even death. This will not be a good experience for you, for your child, or for the poor animal. Pets are for older, responsible children or for adults.

small children and animals don't mix well. Remember, you will be the primary care taker of what ever you get - so it's best, if you really want something to get what you will like and want to keep as a pet for it's life time. If you want something simple, get a small aquarium, or even just a betta or gold fish bowl. Of course, it's not a pet the child can interact with, but your responsibilty level is low. It is recommended that you do not get a cat or dog, or even small rodent (hamster, guinna pig) for a child til they are at least 8 yrs of age. And even then, you are the care taker - not the child.

A hamster was my first real pet that I was responsible for cleaning up after. I think I was 7 or 8 then.

not something you would have to do most of the work with, try a fish and have the child feed it everyday or maybe a bunny. A pet would teach your child responsibility

a great pet fo r a small child is a rat.

i think they are the greatest pets ever. i whould suggest a female rat because as a male get older he (4-5mnths) he becomes aggressive. and rats can fall 30 feet and servive. when your child gets the rat he/she needs to handle it constantly even if it dosent like being handled. carry it on the shoulder. it will love your child to death!

If you are willing to put in the effort and energy a puppy would be good, but puppies can be just as demanding as babies. Fish would probaly be the best bet. It gives them a sense of another living thing without alot of upkeep, training or fees.

labs are very good for small children if you are looking for a dog. Unfortunately, one that's not a puppy, because they chew till they are a couple years old.

They are big, but very gentle. THey love giving kisses, and will let a little kid pull on their ears w/out growling.

My lab lets my 2 year old niece ride him like a horse, cuddle with him, and pull on him. He is her favorite animal.
