I had worked nights so never got to watch 24 and always wanted to start from the beginning, so this summer while nothing was on, joined Blockbuster online and rented EVERY EPISODE. We just knocked out the 4th.
My friend has let me borrow all of the episodes he recorded from the 5th season, on one of the DVD's is a "prequel", he doesn't remember what it is - is this something I should watch prior to beginning the 5th season? That would make sense to me, I just don't want to take the chance of it giving something away, like maybe it was intended for watching after....THANKS

I'm assuming that you're talking about the prequel that appears on the last disc of the 4th Season set which is supposed to lead in to the 5th.

No, it not necessary for you to watch that prequel to get into the 5th season, unless you really want to. I didn't find the prequel very necessary. The premiere of the 5th season explains things just fine for me.

I had only seen series one and series two before we stopped getting cable, and then I hadn't really followed as I'd missed a lot of episodes. Like you I have been watching them through. I am near the end of season 5 now, and I didn't watch the prequel and it made sense to me, so it doesn't matter if you don't.

Go ahead and watch it. Having just watched Season 5 for the second time, you can only appreciate the writing for its foreshadowing and irony more.
