Toshiba, where's why.
- reliable, well built, good parts, GREAT BATTERY (unlike DELL garbage), good tech support.
I recommend that you look at different models. STAPLES has a good one. Costco has several models. Wal-Mart even carries Toshiba. These stores let you look, but also have great return policies

Actually there are several good brands with laptops under $1000 - to me most notably Dell, HP, and IBM. You'll probably get more for your money from Dell & HP - they're pretty comparable in price anymore. All 3 of these brands are good quality brands, though.
I would avoid brands from no-name companies (such as some of those available in Wal-marts) - they're cheaper, but their support and quality aren't proven.

the answer is asus. but seriously, unless you work on the road, its cheaper to buy two computers for work and home now than to buy a laptop.

Look into www.dell.com > Home&Home office, you'll find some great deals. Look for inspiron notebooks (not latitude)
