I don't know about Newton, but Einsteins theory of special relativity provides the only working explaination as to why we could not detect the earth's movement through the Aether with any of Michelson's interferometers. You could say that Michelson, even after his negitive result, did not believe his own results, while Einstein moved forward with new postulates, one being that light has the same speed in all enertial reference frames.
