A 6-week-old girl died Saturday night after she was mauled by the family's dog, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The attack occurred in the girl's home in the 15500 block of Fellowship Street in Valinda, an unincorporated area between La Puente and West Covina, Deputy Cruz Solis said.

An uncle baby-sitting the newborn left the child on a bed unattended while he went to the kitchen to prepare a bottle for her, Solis said. When he returned, he found the family's Pomeranian dog on the bed attacking the baby, Solis said.

The man freed the child from the dog and called for help. The baby died shortly after at Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, according to Solis.

The parents of the child, whose name has been withheld by officials, were in the Philippines, Solis said

A Pomeranian? They are tiny little things!!!! I could have understood if it was a German Shepherd or a PitBull or something.

I love animals and I feel awful when things like this happen. Like you say, the pet is not a deliberate "murderer" like humans are. I feel it was very irreponsible of the newborn baby's parents to leave the child to go to the Phillipines and also for the uncle babysitting to leave the child unattended with a dog!

You never know how an animal will react to the introduction of a newborn baby into the house and you need to be on hand and supervise them at all times. Anything else is negligence on behalf of the person who was supposed to be caring for the child and they must bear the brunt of the blame.

The dog will probably be put to sleep. I can't understand why the uncle left the child unattended though. It's common sense not to leave babies and small children alone with pets, no matter what.

the uncle did nothting wrong, how many of us lay the baby down to go fetch a bottle or diaper? but no, lets blame the uncle or the baby even, that baby should have knew better than to tease the dog by laying there and kicking his litle arms around!! So many people like you will find any excuse to cover for a dogs actions! its never the dogs fault!!! And I sense you are one of them by reading your other questions.
