First you have to know what ram is. Ram stands for Random access memory. When you have lots of programs running or you have some 3d game which takes up a lot of memory, your computer slows down. This is where ram comes in. The more ram you have, that prevents your pc from slowing down or it allows you to run more applications. If you feel that your pc is running slow and it freezes up a lot then it might be time to add another 512 mb. Upgrading is not a bad thing and its not even neccessary. Its all up to you. In case you were wondering Ram is not that expensive. Would suggest PNY 512 Mb Ram. Hope this helps.

the only way upgrading your memory is bad for the laptop is if you are stripping the screws to the panel hiding the chips. seriously, look up the max speed memory supported, (in manual) buy the max for your budget, and follow instructions to install. you will be very glad with the multitasking increase that comes with the jump from 512 to 1gb.

I don't see how in any way shape or form it could be bad for the computer.
You extend the life "usefulness" of your laptop by expanding memory. It's actually the cheapst way to get more life out of the computer without doing major upgrades.

Upgrading would make it seem faster for a longer period of time. With each software update, it gets slower and slower. Keep doing your Disk Cleanups, Defrags, anti-spyware sweeps, use MSCONFIG to turn off startup programs and of course, uninstall unused programs. It takes time to keep things running well.
Yes, upgrading is good. 512 is OK, but the MAX is even better. Check your computer at http://www.coastmemory.com

512 MB is enough if you only surf and write papers... But if you use "heavy" programs (like Autocad) or games (like Battlefield 2, and new generation games) I recommend you to upgrade .

It doesn't have to do anything with durability; it will make it faster, you will see the difference. If you are playing video games or high memory demand applications this would be recommendable.
In this days I’d say 1GB is the standard.

As long as you get the same exact brand and model as the RAM that's already in it, you'll do good. If it's different, it may actually slow down the computer.

No, but it will make your hard drive last longer, since you won't be using it to take the "place" of RAM as often.

Upgrading your computer is never harmful, if you do it right. If you're ever in doubt about HOW to upgrade it, then ask someone.
