Well up untill very recently Amd has held the performance crown when it comes to desktop processors .If your on a tight budget Amd's athlon 64's are still a decent chip but it you're looking for the fastest chip around Intels new Core 2 Duos take that spot especially when the $316 msrp Core 2 Duo E 6600 outperforms a $800 Amd FX-62.
So if your looking for the fastest Core 2 duo is it.. if your not looking for the fastest any socket 939 or am2 Athlon 64 or Athlon 64 x2 will do... Just avoid Celerons, Semprons,Pentium 4'S and Pentium D's.

Right now the best choice is AMD. They have had a huge price cut recently in the socket 939 recently and you can get them for more then half the price at newegg. The thing is these AMD chips have no northbridge which connects to the memory. This way there is nothing choaking the data transfer like Intel chips who are notorious for over heating. On the other hand the brand new duo Intel chips that came out about three weeks ago are now the fastest chips out but don't expect them for any reasonable price. AMD has ruled the road for processors for years and the socket 939 stuff is the most power for the money, cooler, stable, and EXTREMELY overclockable.

Since they're having a price war at the moment, either is great. The AMD's are much faster, unless you go with Intel's Core 2 Duo, which is the fastest processor made at the moment. But, for what you plan on using it for, don't bother. A $69 Athlon 64 3000 will be more than enough.

AMD is currently the best chip because you can get an AMD the can do anything a Pentium can do. AMD actually used to make Pentiums back in the day so the use the same basic architecture. Plus they are close to half the price on some models.

I don't know why everybody is so psyched up about intel when the numbers actuall show that AMD is still on top.
They came up with the first real 64 BIT procesor, Intel followed affter a good while. You might think that they waited to produce a quality CPU, but then, the numbers still put AMD on top.
My advice, get AMD 64!!

AMD is the way to go. The chips cost less (especially these days) and they actually perform better than the Intel chips of the same MHz.

Processors are processors. AMD and Intel are basically the same but just different names. They do the same things. However, AMD are generally cheaper, so a computer with AMD processors inside are cheaper. Hope this helped!
