I have often heard that checking the animal shelter is a good option, the rat will have been handled more. if you get a baby feeder rat get a "hopper" and take a piece of treat food, anything out of a tropical trail mix bag will be fine, and put it in your hand, then lower the hand in the cage, and see who comes over, the curious one will usually make the best pet, I also think males are just slightly better, especially if you are only getting one. two males is the best experience for a novice rat owner. also, ask about any rats they may have "in the back" these will be the youngest, so there is less chance of them having had a bad experience with humans. Never get the rat a wheel, it messes up their spines, and try to avoid pine bedding, the recycle newspaper litter is ok to use, as are all white unscented paper towels and toilet paper (especially the TP, they love to shred and nest in it. Get them a cuttlefish bone to wear their teeth on, they seem to like these better than mineral blocks, in my experience anyway.

Most everything I have read as an answer for you is wrong.
Domestic rats do best on a commercial lab block type food bought at pet stores and healthy treats.
Go to this link and it will tell you everything you need to know about owning a pet rat. Treats should be low in sugar, salt and fat.

Good luck and congrats on getting one of the best and most loving pets you could possibly ever own. Treat him right, they are smart and wonderful little guys.

Rats are omnivors and will eat any thing, Try to stay away from high fat foods like dairy products and chocolate. Also avoid salty things like potato crisps (chips)
Fresh fruit or hard crunchy vegetables (celery or brocoli or carrots) make wonderful snacks

You should feed him pet rat food from the pet store, that has nutrients.

Well, rats will eat anything you will. I feed mine hamster/gerbil mix, as they don't sell 'rat food'. It gives them all the vitamins and nutrients they need. You can give them leftovers for treats, just remember, if its not healthy for you, it's not for them, either.

You can give it sunflower seeds, but not too many as I think they are fattening.
You can also give it pumpkin seeds and unsalted peanuts (but again, in moderation.)
Dried pasta is a good one.
Cherrios, Rice Krispies, cereals like that.
My rat likes Apple Jacks.

We "rat-sat" our neice's rat while they went on vacation. He liked triscuits and cheese. He couldn't keep the cheese on the cracker but he did like both LOL. (TRUE)
(I wasn't really thrilled about this rat-sitting job but he turned out to be okay afterall - saw him trying to crawl out of the cage while I was grabbing some food for him and I said "go...get back in there" and HE LISTENED TO ME!!!
