Because you have to use your feet to run into the End Zone..

That and Soccer is so lame, we had to come up with something better to suit the name.

Well, to a good degree, it's paying homage to it's past. Long ago, the feet were a key component, and even the pass was considered taboo, until a rule was changed.
Heck, little fun fact....there was a time, before the forward pass was legal, that a team would hand the ball to a sure handed short player, and two fullbacks would pick up the guy, and throw him over the line.
After the play was dead, he'd get up, and it would happen again, and again....the human air express....If i remember, Yale had a guy who went on to become a lawyer, was the tossee.
But as the sport evolved, it became more obvious, that running was easier, by carrying the ball. Some forms of the sport, Rugby, or Aussie rules football, are good examples, as a half-and-half version, between soccer and football.
Lastly, it's not gone completely by the wayside...last year, I guess Flutie converted the first drop kick in years, for the pats, before retiring.

American football was established before association football. In those days, there was a greater emphasis on kicking the ball in order to advance it toward the end zones. It has evolved into a pass first, run second, kick third strategy. An Englishman by the last name of Brown decided that association football needed to be different and coined the term "soccer" that continues to be marketed under that name by the powers that be in Europe. Basically, we didn’t need to name it soccer because we already had football.
