Hello, this coming year is going to be my senior year in high school, and i decided to join the football team. This is my first time ever playing football, and I am doing quite well, except my main area of weakness is tackling. My coaches have assigned me to play defensive back (either corner back or free safety), but I am not exactly sure how to properly tackle an opponent, and i always seem to hold back as i am worried of getting hurt. Does anyone have any advice they could give me to help me with these issues? Thanks in advance.

See what you're hitting. Keep your head up.
Too often, you'll see guys trying to unload on a guy to knock him down rather than wrap him up and take him down. But to do that, they'll often lead with their head. If you lead with the top of your head, that's the most common way people get paralyzed.

Put your head to the side of the guy (preferably the side where he's carrying the ball), bury your shoulder into him, keep your feet moving and drive through him if you can, wrap your arms around his legs (around the knees if you can) and take him down.

It's always nice when you can make a "statement" tackle that makes the crowd go "oooh", but it's more important that you MAKE the tackle. Be a model of consistency and efficiency.

Don't lead with your head, use your sholders when ever possible. When making contact left your head up or to the side, if you hit with the head, that is spearing and it can cause you and the person you are tackleing injury. Try for the hips. Always watch the hips of the runner, legs and arms can be moved to easily and you will miss the tackle. Be moving when you tackle some one. Your momentem will help with the tackle and keep both you and the runner from getting injured. Use you legs if in tight contact keep moving forward. If you get pushed back and off balance you may get hurt. Don't jump into piles, watch for the runner to break free or for fumbles. If one or two of your other teammates are making a tackle, they will not need you and you may cause the runner to break loose. But be ready in case the does get loose. Use your sholders and wrap your arms around the legs and hips of the person to make a good tackle. Listen to your coaches during practice, the know what is best and how to get you to tackle correctly.

head up at all times get low and bring arms back a little bit. Now make sure your legs a bent when about to tackle explode with legs into the belly aim where the letters on the jersey are. You will probably not get hurt but if you do a football injury is one of the most glorious things that could happen last year I broke my wrist and Trust me the credit you get from your team mates is worth it. If it helps picture the player being tackled as something you really hate

First off, cast out that fear. If you look at football players, d-backs rarely get hurt tackling another player. They often hurt the ones they're tackling tho.

Now, as for the technique.. Try to never tackle the upper body. Aim for the waist or legs. To avoid being burned, ignore thier eyes. Watch the center of the torso, as that is the center of gravity and will indicate which direction they are going and will go.

Then just hit them with everything you have, every play. They are the enemy, pure and simple. To fail to tackle them places you as the loser in the contest.

Tackling is more so mental, but lifting and push ups will help. I say doing leg weights help a lot. Always have anger with you whenever you want to tackle them, play angry like the other person has really hurt you, that will REALLY HELP. You need to be aggressive as you can, it will help a lot. I hope you are not light weight, don't eat too much but eat until you are satisfied, that way you will have a buffer body, so when you are mad, you will pop their head off and they will be on their knees. If they are bigger than you, go after the legs and I mean it, TAKE THE LEGS OUT! Hit the legs as hard as you can and wrap your arms around the legs, try to drag them down and remember, come at the legs HARD! Hit them as hard as you can down there.

Don't lead with your head. Making sure that you hit them square in between the numbers. Also, since you're playing defensive back make sure that as you're going at the person tackle them you are taking aim at their outside shoulder that way if you miss the tackle they will have to cut back in and it's a chance that they can cut back into one of your teammates. Also, make sure that you keep your eyes open and head up. There's nothing more embarrassing than going at someone with your head down, eyes close and miss them completely. Also make sure that you wrap your arms around them and not just try to grab with your fingers. You could tear off a fingernail.

If you have a problem tackling, why do you play defense?

It's all in the legs. Almost like preparing to make a jump, bend at the knees, and lunge forward. As the Brian Urlacher commercial said: "Rip through".
