Well what they advertise is the least fare which is prevailing in the market but its not necessary that what the price is advertised is prevailing at the time of your reservations and the seats would have been taken away by someone earlier might be through a normal travel agent who is not selling through web... so its always better to do a window shopping on the website and go to a regular travel agent for your real deal... on the other hand i can suggest you another way out in the deal... check out on the website and it shows you a list of different airlines and then visit the airline website .. and you can steal the seat at low fare out there... its not just the low fare but also if you are a regular travel do not forget to make a frequent flier card of the airlines you fly with where there are chances that you do get other services other than the low fares... (well this is not part of the answer but its a suggestion)...

There may be governmental restrictions that websites and travel agencies have to deal with and so many times that's why it's better to deal directly with a travel agent who can answer you questions as well as do the skut work for you.

I know Consumer and Coproate Affairs in Ontario is closely watching travel ads now because many people were feeling ripped off when quoted one price but it turned out to be something else. Provincial and federal sales taxes also eat up alot of the costs as do airport fees, fuel taxes etc.

Because they're a con!! I'm a UK travel agent. What we advertise in our window exists, and exists at the advertised price! We don't then tell you you have to pay underoccupancy supplements, booking fees, transfer costs etc. If you want to waste time surfing, that's fine, but don't believe everything you read! With us, what you see is what you get. Let's hear it for the high street agents!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Because they want the profit. Greed runs the world. Hotel in NYC $99 per night through one of these services and Only $59 a night if you go directly to the hotel web site. Directly to the hotel guarentees your reservation. These travel services do not. The hotels will let them book you but will Not guarentee their bookings. So you may arrive and find you have no room.

by law if a company has a certain percentage of deals at a low price, it is allowed to use that as its 'lead' price - e.g. an airline has to have a certain percentage of seats under £5 if it wants to advertise that. However, they obv go very soon so it is very difficult to get them - and they do (slowly!) update the deals.

Because all companies do it no individual company will make itself less competitive by showing the average price or higher brackets etc.

This is just to get you to call them on the phone...once on the phone the dream holiday you wanted for that fantastic price as advertised on the Internet as surprisingly sold out...but they can offer you an alternative holiday to some where you don't want to go for a price which you can't afford...simple!
