Academic writing is a term used in schools to describe writing styles that are used to answer school-type essay questions. Some examples:
Cause/Effect; you explain the cause of something and what the results are
Argument; you try to prove a point, such as why we should brush our teeth
Explanation; You describe how something works or how something is done (recipes are an example)
One thing they have in common is a theme (topic) sentence that usually starts the essay.
