Because it's a major sporting event and takes a lot of planning.
If all major sporting events were held yearly then we'd have an Olympics, World Cup, Commonweath Games, European Cup etc happening every year. There's be too much and events would end up clashing with each other.

The World Cup FINALS were in Germany in July and 32 national teams qualified.
You ask a great question. The World Cup is actually a 2-3 year tournament. There are qualifying games all around the globe over the course of the 2-3 years leading up to the 32 team finals, which we just watched in Germany.
Some teams qualify automatically (South Africa will host 2010, so they get in automatically), some qualify in their very last game attempt (such as England this past WC)
I watched almost every game of the WC in Germany, I kinda miss it too.

Well, i used to ask the same question just after the WC 2006.But then I understood that if it was held every yr or every 2 yrs then there won't be the enthusiasm or excitment in waiting for the next WC so that our fav team will win.WC will be just another annual sporting event if it is held every 1 yr.So to keep the glory and excitment of WC,it is held evey 4 yrs.U see, there is a lotta fun in waiting in anticipation for the next WC.So now ,for the next four years we can bet tht our fav team will win, collect all kinds of info about ur fav players and wait in anticipation for a month of football.
Morover I also think that FIFA needs 4 yrs to complete the qualifying rounds.

It happens every 4 years because there are lots of qualifier to deal with. Plus organizing a world cup took a lots of efforts for the host country.
I hope it stays what it is. Makes the cup more precious, we still have champions league every year.

Yeah, you're completely right. That's like, have stucked in my mind since the wc 2006 begin. I don't want it to be over, It's the only thing that's give me sumthin to do. I keep hoping everyday so that the wc will back, or at least make it once per year.
I'm glad I'm not the only one to miss the excitement.
And to think the wc is over without bringing me any beautiful memories... I'm sure I'm not the only one tough...
Anyway, thanx for posting the question, now I know I'm not the only one and I shouldn't feel stupid about them... ^.^

because if it happens every 1 or 2 years like leagues,we would get bored....because it happens every 4 years,everyone are excited...its all about that spirit of the game..i cant describe it ...u will know what iam talking about if u r a true soccer fan...besides planning construction all those should be there...

I wish the world cup was every 10 years i hate it.
