Well it shouldn't be a problem if you're really into the course. I suppose a frustrated professor gave you the lecture.. By that he / she probably wanted to say that you were distracted at the moment of speaking, or in general that you're not putting in as much as you should / could / he expects from you / as much as you are supposed to / in compare with other students...

He/she probably think that you spend way too much time going out, having fun, making friends, making love, shopping, partying etc. and that instead you should spend all of your free time "focusing" on a college course (working your a** off studying).. cause that's how he/she's probably spent his/her college years.

The funniest thing is that he/she means well. Maybe he/she is just afraid that you'll eventually get bored with the course (you must admit going out is much more interesting than studying), and you'll decide to quite it. And he/she wouldn't like to see that happen cause he/she cares for you (if that is one of your parents speaking)..

i don't get it focus has a specific meaning

you put all of your energy and time into a course
