Am I the only one? Since I was a kid, I've noticed that on TV commercials, they always pronounce caramel "care-uh-mel" and syrup "see-rup". I pronounce them "sir-up" and "car-mul", as does everyone else I know. What is the deal? Has anyone else been horrifically burdened and scarred by this discrepancy? I don't know how to cope.............. ;-)
And you're right. Absolutely yes, I do need to get a life. Answer this and I'll take on the burning issues of, oh, let's say the Middle East. Now THERE'S something a wee bit bigger and more troublesome that might deserve our attention.

I'm from Illinois and I say it the same as you do. my little brother says it the opposite way. I had an arguement with him last week about how to say caramel.

I grew up in northeast Missouri, and now live in Virginia. I pronounce it care-uh-mel, and sir-up. I'm pretty sure I used to pronounce it car-mel, but I'm a Starbucks junkie, and they pronounce it care-uh-mel there, so I just kinda evolved into the current pronunciation.

I'm lazy so I pronounce them "sir-up" and "car-mul" regardless of the spelling (carmel or caramel). I also say "ee-thur" as opposed to "eye-thur" (either). What can I say? I'm obviously uneducated.

You know, it had never crossed my mind until you mentioned it. Well, I know "care-uh-mel" is the proper pronounciation of it (as "car-mul" is Carmel, a mountain in the vicinity [or within, not exactly sure where] of Israel... a distinction that was stuck in my head for the short while I went to Sunday School as a kid, and stayed there even 20 or so years later), but even so, I still pronounce it "car-mul". I also say "sir-up", only 'cuz that's how my whole family pronounces it as well...
*ponders* How is it that those two words escape the American accent, and retain a 'proper' pronounciation, is beyond me.

I'm in Western Canada; we say "carmul" and "sirup". Let everyone else deal with the middle east....

I say syrup "SIR-UP", caramel "CARE-UH-MELL", and carmel "CAR-MOLE"
