I've been living in the UK for about 2 and half years. I've got a valid new zealand license but not sure if it's valid for UK

Look at the following document

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/drivers/drvingb.htm#5.%20All%20other%20countries

or contact the DVLA for more information. They will be able to tell you where you stand as far as UK law is concerned.

By 2.5 years you should technically have applied for a UK drivers licence. It's just a matter of transferring your NZ one and you don't need to do a test or anything. BUT, as with everything in the UK, it is a pain in the %^& as there is a lot of red tape.

If you send your form in by post, they will want your passport and it can take ages so you're better off going to a DVLA office to get it done on the spot (I think the only one you can do this is at Wimbledon).

Make sure you check everything on the form very thoroughly and make sure you have all the documents exactly as they want them. My husband converted his Oz licence was told various things by various DVLA people and eventually got his UK licence after sending in his passport on 2 separate occassions and then going to the Wimbledon office twice.

BTW you can generally get by on a foreign licence (as if you get pulled over and they check your licence it's unlikely that they would check your passport at the same time to see how long you've been here) but you generally need a UK licence if you want to hire a car in the UK (otherwise you usually pay a fee).

Hi, my boyfriends parents are from New Zeland, you can drive but you need to apply for an English licence after a certain amount of time, sorry not sure of exact figure. Check out www.dvla.gov.uk for more info. Hope you're enjoying the UK!

Can't see why it wouldn't be valid, I have some lovely Polish neighbours and their driving licences are valid here to drive on our roads, guess you could just pop into the nearest Police station to you and have a word with them, they will be able to answer your question straight away, good luck and happy driving.

No you're not....if you're still in the UK after 12 months you have to apply for a UK provisional licence..and pass your test!!! If you have an accident in the mean time...you will find that your insurance company will not pay out!!!!

Nope, not any more - you had 12 months in which to relicence with a UK licence, but now that's 1.5 years expired... so you'll need to pass a UK test before you can drive.

I would contact the AA or someone and ask, they will be able to help you. I think it depends on how long you want to drive for. I had to get an international licence to drive in US as I was there for a year, but just to hire a car for 2wks thats not necessary

Ask at your local police station. I think it'll be valid, but if it isn't they'll be able to tell you what to do.
