It is a wonderful question and you are right the more you think about it the more amazing it gets. Why is there anything at all? It is this question that - for me gives my life meaning. Afterall if things - life, the universe, me, ARE -then we are an eternal mystery, but the paradox is we ARE that mystery!
For me this always meant the 'answer' had to be within me - I contain the universe and the univers contains me. This is an intuitive response prompted by my reading a lot of buddhist and related philosophy and from practicing a way of life based on living in the here and now, stripping away the layers of illusion produced by attachment to thoughts and desires and realising that our true nature is here and now, not some great exotic mystery but simply what is here now - everything! We are a void full of everything.
Obviously this is an experiential process that cannot be realised without some form of practice involving waking up each moment - not easy! Yet the simple mind blowing question of why any of THIS should be at all keeps us focused on THIS - if we meditate deeply enough. Not everyone is interested in this kind of questioning, I feel sorry for them. They have missed the beautiful mystery that they are unfolding second to second. Life cannot be put in a box, it is enough to ask the question and then live the experience as fully as we can. Nice one for asking it again!

The first answer seems a little bit of a joke and yet it is perfect in it's simplicity and that is: It seemed a good idea at the time! LOL
But due to the complexity brought about within it's creations problems occurred that had to be dealt with. The first BIG PROBLEM was of course the Dinosaurs. To big for such an intricate world. Plus with the ever growing and developing mind and skills of the creator, the desire to make it perfect was born. And so it came to be. PERFECT THAT IS.
Then came us. We niether saw this or understood our simplicity within such a complex creation. 'There must be more to it than simply eating, sleeping and mating?' So our journey begins, we desire to find out 'Why?' What are we, why are we here, where have we come from, what is life all about? And the simple answer is to know, to love, to enjoy the simple pleasures of being a human. Able to do anything it desires. Apart from fly that is. (Something we could possibly gain later if we connected with the source of all power within perfection) With God anything is possible.
In desiring only that which we need, we are closer to the truth of 'Why?'
Our other thoughts and desires are that which destract us from What Is.
In looking for something more, we loose the best part of being human. A being that REALLY CAN APPRECIATE CREATION. Just for the love of it!
To be, to experience, to love in every moment 'What is'. Nothing more than this is required of us.

I believe that the answer lie's in all of us and stare's each and everyone of us in the face. You did not actually ask a specific question the why in itself is the fundamental question that drives our specie's not to put down the other creature's of our small world who all have there why's? It's just that our why's are so much more conscious deep "why's" than our other animal friends. It comes to me that the kind of "why" a man (or woman) can ask is harder to explain because of the depth of the question we are able to ask because of our unique way of thinking. The question still not answered I lead onto my next point now knowing why it's so hard to answer the question(s) because of it's enormous depth. It's quite reasonable to accept Two main possibilities 1/ Because we are able to ask the question, we will be able to comprehend the answer 2/ we can ask the question like a child asks but doesn't really grasp the answer until years of life experience have done there job and he just knows! Having long forgotten the question. So getting back to "the answer lies within us" being the conscious creatures we are it has been said that we are the consciousness of the universe, though does a cell in your body know that it exists in your body (lets say its universe) as a part of something whole a tiny piece that makes up something much bigger? No of course not but it cannot ask why partly because it has no lips and mostly because it has no brain but it is at some level connected to a brain that does know so on some level it knows too. So to sum up, you being part of this great universe a small yet not insignificant part that is connected in many ways (some more than other's) you have the answer in you above you guiding you, though you will be just as unaware as the cell in your body being instructed by your brain as you are of the immenseness that is our life, our universe but you can ask the question. But could a brain explain to a cell what it's for or part off, no of course not it knows what its for but does not know why, so the meaning being you can ask the question but you will never have a definitive answer as there is no one who can give it to u. The universe knows but it cannot tell you, you know but you cannot be sure because you have no teacher just a mind that questions. I guess not knowing for sure is what gives our lives there true meaning, It's better to have questions and no answers than answer's but no questions. Now this could be why, but without someone to tell you if it is , you will never be told it is so but you might know it is. hope this helps just went off on one then

Is the question this: How do you own the universe?
The answer is quite simple. You win the Lottery, Euro Millions, marry some very rich old bloke and get him to make a will leaving you everything, and then you find the lunatics who own some of the universe, buy it off of them, buy the rest, and charge everyone rent for living in it.m Apart from me of course..

You asked a killer question, and to answer it... I can't remember the name of this line of philosophy, but two men are standing in a cave looking at a shadow being casted by the light. Now the two men, no matter how close they stand together will not see the same shadow. the same goes for a room of philosophers... we all won't, see the exact same perspective... Although you might understant the persective, because you may have just been standing there...

What's it all about Fred?
Well, only my humble opinion, but it seems to me that it's all about the difference between thinking with your head and thinking with your heart.
Think about all the times youve personally thought with your heart, even against your head's input, remember the consequences. Then remember all the times you thought only with your head and the consequences. When youve worked all of that out.....you will have your own answer.

What I think that matters is able to breath, good health, family, friends and be able to accomplish your personal goals even if it is to walk around the block or to go to the gym or start a business even helping out people in need!

We all die, and in the end all we done in life was create an image of ourselves/society/race/specie's, to be remembered by.
So are we creating the right image?

it seems to me you want other to tell you how to become wealthy. If they share their secrets, it will not matter in the long run, you have to have a personal motivation , a drive , and if you don't have it, I don't think they can inspire it. the only way to inspire it is to have walked in their shoes. you really need to ask the question, you assume too much here.
