I have to agree with the above answer. 35 gallons will do well for a fish-only-with-live-rock tank, where you would only need a good three stage filter, skimmer and wave maker. Corals actively try to kill each other as they compete for enough room to grow. In that small a tank, you won't have the necessary room to let them all to survive, and it would be too difficult to maintain the exact water quality. It would be possible if you only stick to soft corals, mushrooms, sponges and xooanthids (which look very nice in a tank and don't require metal halide lighting). They also would only require a three stage filter, skimmer, wave maker, and high quality florescent and actinic lighting - one tube of each (you would also need a marine test kit and hydrometer).

i disagree that you need to have a 100 gallon reef tank. i have 3 reefs smaller than that (5, 12 & 30 gallons) and have great success with them. of course patience is a key as with any reef tank. if you are serious then do tons of research before you start.

35 gallons is really too small for a reef tank. to keep a ballance of the chemicals in the water you should go for at least 100 gallons. and have a circulation of 1000 gallons per hour through filtration.

First, you are going to need about $500 and someone who is very knowledgeable about marine tanks. I think you should consider a 55 gallon at the very least as a beginner. Being a freshwater fanatic, I will defer to the first two people who answered. They sound like they know their stuff.
