its raining...i can fly..how high should i go to avoid the rain?

Here are the cloud classifications:
High Clouds:16,000 feet-45,000 feet
cirrus,cirrostratus,cirrocumulus
Middle Clouds:6,500 feet-23,000 feet
altocumulus,altostratus,nimbostratus(rain)
Low Clouds:Surface-6,500 feet
fogs,stratus,stratocumulus,cumulus,
cumulonimbus(thunderstorm)
The only clouds that produce precipitation
are nimbostratus and cumulonimbus.
The tops of cumulus congestus and
cumulonimbus can reach into the stratosphere.

Hah!! This is a trick question, isn't it??

You only have to fly up to the altitude where the temperature has dropped to 0C (32F)! Above that, there will be no rain. It will be snow/ice!

The NWS launches radiosonde balloons from locations all over the USA twice daily. One such location is Davenport IA. Here is the data that the radiosonde acquired:

The balloon reached freezing point at 566mb (which is the barometric pressure; in the right-hand column, the third stat down is FRZ:566), or at an altitude of about 4900 meters, which is ~ 16,000 feet. (This data will have been updated if you are reading this after about 8PM CDT tonight, Aug 14...)

You would not have experienced rain above 16K feet this morning above the Quad Cities.

How high you have to fly to rise above any precip varies infinitely from one cloud to another, and even within one cloud. Most clouds, even big thunderstorms, do not go much higher than about 50,000 feet. Most of the time, getting up to about 25,000 feet will permit you to enhance your suntan, Supergirl.

Well, to avoid the rain, Supergirl, you have to fly above the clouds, and the height of the clouds is variable, so it all depends on the meterological conditions that day wherever you are. You would need to know the cloud ceiling, and there are several different ways to calculate that, but I am afraid I can't help you with that. U'll probably have to fly in the stratosphere, i.e., the layer of atmosphere above the troposphere that surrounds the earth. That means u will be flying atleast 10 kms. above the earth. There are 3 main classification of clouds, and they mostly exist between 6,000 to 17,000 feet above the earth. Most airplanes will fly at an altitude of about 10-15 kms above the surface to be in the stratosphere, which is the dynamically stable sphere in the Earth's atmosphere..!
