Hi there i have a 2000 model ford festiva and i was driving home this afternoon and without notice my engine started rev higher and my speed started to slow off. i have heard of brake fade, which doesn't allow you to stop because your brakes are so hot, can the same thing happen with your clutch? I pulled off to the side of the road for a little while, but there was no improvement. Taking off at a red light was a real mission, because the engine would rev but the car would take off very slowly.( yes my foot was completely off the clutch pedal). I have general automotive knowledge, but i'm not sure if this happens, or if i need a new cluch plate, or oil is leaking onto the plate, or something even worse? If anyone can help that would be great. Oh i drive the car properly and dont give the car a thrashing.

Your clutch is definitely shot. You should buy a clutch and pressure plate. If you want to save some money you can take your pressure plate to a machine shop and they will resurface it much cheaper than the cost of a new one. Make sure you get a clutch alignment tool, pilot bushing, and throwout bearing. It will end up costing a few hundred for parts and it will be a pretty major job to replace. A local shop will probably charge you 500 bucks to do the job. Good luck. Sorry for your troubles.

You have at least some glazing of the clutch plate.

Yes, check for a clutch adjustment at the tranny side ..... check fluid level ....also check if the slave cylinder has air in it (like bleeding brakes) and check to make sure it is not contaminated with water (if grayish color bleed clutch system and replace with new fluid)
If no adjustment or doesn't help and fluid is fine... You are left with one of the following problems: worn clutch plate; glazed clutch plate; broken spring or tooth in pressure plate; bent or broken control rod (controls throwout bearing behind pressure plate).Unfortunately these include removal of tranny too see.
Two other thoughts: listen for a grinding/howling noise from throwout bearing (while engine is running clutch engaged); If you do have to take any tranny off check for front seal leaks on the tranny and rear seal leaks on the motor and always replace the throwout bearing ($5 to $10 a pop but well worth it) on a manual tranny.

Your clutch is worn badly. Be sure to replace the pressure plate and throwout bearing while you're in there. It will save a lot of headaches down the road. It's also a good idea to have the flywheel faced if it shows any signs of wear or cracking on the surface.

Try seeing if your car has a cluth adjuster. Sounds like your clutch is going out.
