Any vauxhall cavalier - they are reliable, still relatively good looking and even with a lot of mileage are good workhorses with ample bootspace. Repairs are cheap because the parts are cheap. There are many well cared for models still out there even tho the Vectra is the updated version. I have a 10 year old car that has been Vauxhall serviced every year and has a genuine 80,000 miles.
Expect to pay around 1000 quid for a good one, although up to about 2000 for more powerful models in great nick.
The insurance is also very good - fully comp 150 quid - althou of course this depends on postcode, no claims etc.
Good luck

Not quite a hatchback, but the Toyota Matrix is a useful car. Decent room , good accessibilty, reasonable price and pretty good fuel economy. Of course if you're into "American" brands the Pontiac Vibe is the identical car with cosmetic changes.

Has to be a focus, huge boot, economical, quick enough and still looks fresh faced! 1.6 zetec petrol with a full service is best bet, cheap insurance 440 miles to £45 worth of petrol, alloys air con remote locking etc, plus you can get a good one from about 2,500 s,v,t reg.

it depends on your budget. I have a diesel Mondeo which is pretty cheap to run, has loads of boot space and is great for ferrying my 4 kids around
