In Alaska, according to your government website, if you are registered Independent you are allowed to vote on one of two ballot types. The first is the candidate ballot where you can vote for candidates from the following political parties in your state: Alaska Democratic Party, Alaskan Independence Party, Alaska Libertarian Party, and the Green Party of Alaska. You are not allowed to vote in the Alaska Republican Party primaries unless you are registered as a Republican. Oddly enough, however, if you are registered Republican you can vote in EITHER the Republican Primary OR the other primary (Democrat, Independent, Libertarian, or Green).

Or, if there is not a candidate that you like you can vote on the Measure Ballot, which is a list of initiatives that your state government wants to take effect and put into law.

You can vote only on the candidate ballot OR the measure ballot.

Hope this helped.

On the other hand, other posters are correct in saying that state law determines which side Independent registered voters can vote for. Often times a Republican or Democrat will register as Independent so they can vote in the other side's primary for a weaker candidate hoping that they will win and go against a stronger candidate from their side in the actual election.

If you are registered as an Independent, you cannot vote in Primaries. Republican vote for republicans, and Democrats vote for Democrats in Primaries.
In some cases crossover voting is permitted. I think it should not be.

Depends on your state's rules. In my state, NC, if you are a registered independent you can only vote in the democratic primary.

You have to be affiliated with the party to vote in the primaries.
