This question is more commonly known as the Riddle of the Sphinx, the answer is man, who as a child crawls on all fours, as an adult walks on two feet and as an old man walks with the aid of a cane.

when i left work on friday i closed the window...when i came in today i realised i had jammed a spider in it. It only had 4 legs as there was only half of a spider left. As i tried to pick it up, 2 more of its legs came off, leaving only 2 left. I sellotaped one back on so its now got 3 but i've lost the other leg so i may have to make it a new one out of a paperclip.

YOU indeed, as a toddler, walked on all four; and when you became a little grown up and maybe thats who you are today, you changed to homo-erectus and started on just two. And later on in life, perhaps at age 70-89, and maybe your waist couldn't hold any longer you decided instead of a wheel chair, you settled for a walk stick.

That would be a human. He walks with three legs in old age because he uses a cane. I think this is the riddle of the Sphinx.
