when i left work on friday i closed the window...when i came in today i realised i had jammed a spider in it. It only had 4 legs as there was only half of a spider left. As i tried to pick it up, 2 more of its legs came off, leaving only 2 left. I sellotaped one back on so its now got 3 but i've lost the other leg so i may have to make it a new one out of a paperclip.

YOU indeed, as a toddler, walked on all four; and when you became a little grown up and maybe thats who you are today, you changed to homo-erectus and started on just two. And later on in life, perhaps at age 70-89, and maybe your waist couldn't hold any longer you decided instead of a wheel chair, you settled for a walk stick.
Infant - All Four
After infancy - Just Two
Old and Grey - Walk Stick inclusive(Probably)

Ah, the Riddle of the Sphinx. Man crawls on all fours as a baby, walks upright as a man, and walks with the assistance of a cane when he gets old.

That would be a human. He walks with three legs in old age because he uses a cane. I think this is the riddle of the Sphinx.

This riddle, in slightly different language, is over 2000 years old. It's the one Oedipus solved to become king of Thebes and marry the queen - his mother.
