It's a phrase used all the time, but I haven't the faintest what it means. Can someone explain what is a "blue-chip" company when refered to in job adverts etc?

Blue-chip---The highest-valued gambling chips are blue, and this mark of quality has flowed from the casino to the stockmarket, where 'blue-chip' stocks are those of the highest market value and supposedly the highest safety. Blue-chips are not infallible, though, or invulnerable to losses.

In casinos, the blue chip is usually the most expensive so this term is applied to companies that are worth more than a billion dollars. These companies include IBM, ICI, British Petroleum etc. The big players on the stock market! Although Enron was blue chip and now its only fish and chip!
So if your employer lands a blue chip client, then you will get a champagne break instead of a coffe break!

If you make informed decisions and approach your penny stock investments with the same thoroughness that you’d use in your other investments, you too can unlock a whole lot of profit potential. Learn here https://tr.im/DpHyq

It’s absolutely true that penny stock investors can make very quick gains. Synutra International, Inc. (NASDAQ: SYUT) is a great example of a penny stock. This dairy-based, nutritional-products company has jumped from a little Bulletin Board operation to a billion dollar corporation. The company finally graduated from Over-the-Counter status to the NASDAQ Stock Market bringing with it 113% gains in less than two months.

This happens all the time and it’s how some of the best investors in the world became the richest investors in the world. Buying some shares for pennies on the dollar and selling at $10 or $20 is possibly the fastest way from being a hobby investor to a super investor

Definition of 'Blue Chip'
A nationally recognized, well-established and financially sound company. Blue chips generally sell high-quality, widely accepted products and services. Blue chip companies are known to weather downturns and operate profitably in the face of adverse economic conditions, which help to contribute to their long record of stable and reliable growth.

Investopedia explains 'Blue Chip'

The name "blue chip" came about because in the game of poker the blue chips have the highest value.
Blue chip stocks are seen as a less volatile investment than owning shares in companies without blue chip status because blue chips have an institutional status in the economy. Investors may buy blue chip companies to provide steady growth in their portfolios. The stock price of a blue chip usually closely follows the S&P 500.

Blue Chip refers to major companies like Disney, Microsoft. They'd be Blue Chip Stock. The chances of them going bankrupt and you losing your money investing in them is very slim.

I think it has to do with Poker and the Blue Poker Chips. Don't quote me on it though.

Penny stocks are loosely categorized companies with share prices of below $5 and with market caps of under $200 million. They are sometimes referred to as "the slot machines of the equity market" because of the money involved. There may be a good place for penny stocks in the portfolio of an experienced, advanced investor, however, if you follow this guide you will learn the most efficient strategies https://tr.im/c8109
