I run a handicrafts workshop for adults with learning disabilities, and we make paper mache pots and bowels etc., By using PVA glue, watered down by half, Strips of paper, TORN, not cut, and big old brushes to paste everything into place. You need to make at least 5 layers, then leave to dry.

You can make a paste of newspaper, by mixing small pieces of newspaper in a bowl of water, boiling in a microwave cooker, several times, and then mixing some PVA glue and water, mix into a paste, then leave to cool. Covered with clingfilm, till needed, IT TAKES PRACTICE to get your times right though!
Good luck/

You use paste, and dilute it with water if you have to, then dip strips of newspaper into it (soak them) and slap them on whatever you are making, e.g., a balloon. You need to coat it very thickly so that the construct is stable when you are finished, and dries strong. You should keep it wet until you are finished, and then allow plenty of time to dry before painting it. It is usual to use something as a base for papier mache, e.g. a balloon which you then pop when your work is dry, leaving a hollow shell, or a box of some form.

If you don't have paste, you can dilute PVA glue using water to reach the right consistency.

Yes, I once made a lovely farmyard for my 2 year old son, it turned out really well, the best way is to tear newspaper up in to little pieces about 1/4 inch in size, or so, don't cut as the torn ends help it to bind, mix with wallpaper paste, and let get really soggy, if no wallpaper paste can use water and flour, but-paste is best. Then layer it onto some sort of frame, Oi used a piece of polystyrene but you can use wire, or cardboard or anything else, slowly build up into the shape you want, allow to dry really well then use poster paint to paint, good luck and what do you want to make?
