Hi, I used to work at Vision Express and Dollond and Aitchison opticians as an optometry associate.
The visual field examination is nothing to worry about. It is completely non-invasive and not painful, meaning they are not going to put anything in your eyes or poke you about.
It's used to test your peripheral vision. To know what your peripheral vision is try this; look straight ahead at a chosen point. Now lift your hand to the side of your head. Keep looking at the point. Wiggle your fingers, you will notice that you can see your fingers wiggling at the edge of your vision. This field of vision is called peripheral.
What to expect when you go for your test; you will be shown into a darkened room with a large box like machine on a table. It will have an open front. This is called a DICON machine. The assitant will explain that there is a screen inside the box which you will be able to see by looking straight ahead of you into the box. She will then explain that during the test a constant light will appear on the screen. You must follow this light with your eyes as it moves around the screen. During the test, other lights will flash up around the constant dot. You will be given a button and asked to press it the same number of times as the number of lights you see, excluding the constant light.
When she is happy that you understand and possibly after a short demonstration, the assistant will ask you to put a patch over one of your eyes and rest your head against the machine. Then she will start the test. After you have finished on that eye. She will come back and cover the other eye so you can do the test with your other eye.
When you are finished, the machine will print out the results which look like two grey circles. This shows the optician how much you can see in your peripheral vision.
Poor peripheral vision can be a sign of glaucoma which is a disease of the eye that causes tunnel vision but can be controlled if caught early. Therefore everyone over the age of 25 should be offered a visual field exam when they go for an eye test.
Don't worry about it, I'm sure it will be fine.

There are 2 different ways that this is done. A slit lamp is one way and it is a visual inspection. The other is a test where you sit and look at this cone in front of your eye. There is a light that is projected on the screen and you click when you see it. N obig deal - just time consuming and boring.

Visual field is the entire area of vision seen by one eye while concentrarating vision on a single point. It`s simple painless and informative.1)Confrontation method--in this the doctor sits right in front of the examinee and compares your field with his visual field..You will close right eye when he closes the left and you will close your left eye when he closes his right. While you concentrate in his eye he moves his finger from extreme left to right and from upwards to downwards.Tentatively he notes down the field. 2)Perimeter--is a half sphere with a movable spot .The entire field of each eye is mapped.Location of blind spot s mapped.3)Campimetry ---is used to measure central field in more detail using a screen and lights Field of vision test is diagnostic of all defects in retina, optic nerve, optic tract, and optical part of cerebral cortex..

I had one. All I did was stare at a green screen like a computer which showed little dots flashing every few seconds. If I saw a flash I had to press a moniter to register it. Basically, if your field of vision is ok you will see them all, if not you won't. It was boring but harmless.

Is that the machine which you look straight ahead into (without moving your eyes), and have to click a button on a pad every time you spot a light appear?
If it is, its nothing to worry about. I had it done, and scored quite highly.

Don't worry.
You look at a darkened screen, one eye at a time, and press a button when you can see faint lights displayed.
Takes a bit of getting used to but is very routine.
