I do the same thing. The best way I could describe my reasoning is that it blocks out the excess light, reducing the glare, which increases the contrast between the image and the background, making the image (be it a picture or letters, or whatnot) a little more clear. Plus, it forces the eyes to focus on the specific item, instead of the whole picture at once.

Squinting changes the shape foe the lens of the eye, changing the focal point and educing the light that enters the eye. This can sometimes enable you to see things when there is too much light

I think people do it to focus on something. It's not really about seeing the bigger picture but, seeing something clearer. I know when i do it, things seem to be a little more focused. Although you're right about not being able to see as much. I know one thing, it can create some wrinkles around the eyes if you do it too much.

For those of us with astigmatism, it helps to cut the glare that blends the edges of objects.
For those of us with near-sightedness (and elongated eyeballs), it puts pressure on the eye and brings us closer to 20/20 vision.
Of course, if you have 20/400 vision like me, you give up on squinting and just start saving your pennies and dimes for Lasik.

OMGOSH I DO IT ALL THE TIME!!!! I think it actually works. My co-workers and freinds always ask me do I wear glasses because I do it. I wear contacts and I still do it. I think it's just a habit that's kinda hard to get rid of lol
