Lord of the Rings is a classic and epic tale, which cannot be beat for storyline- the casting was fantastic, special effects, acting, costume and set design etc. were unsurpassable- technically, it's the better of the two films with a mile (in my opinion).
However- LOTR is such a long film that it's really tiresome to watch and takes it out of you a lot... it's a shame, because it really is a great story, but it's difficult to take all of it in in a single- or even multiple sittings.
Solely due to the length of the film, I'm going to choose Pirates of the Carribean- it was a lot less intense, thus easier to watch, shorter, didn't overload you with info, also had great effects and was a memorable film... but in regards to the trilogy and the sequal for Pirates- Pirates was crap... I thought the sequel sucked. But that's just me.
