The original dance, Mambo is based on the 2,3,4 beats with a hold on 1....Salsa is a derivative of the dance, based on 1,2,3. hold on the 4 beat. Mambo is the "CHA CHA" Without the cha cha steps. Mambo is done to dance music that is too fast to do cha cha to. Today, Salsa has basically replaced Mambo because most people have a problem NOT stepping on the down beat (the 1 beat). It really only matters in dance contests...if you go out and do Salsa in a Mambo contest, you lose before you start. Mambo is the dance that started it all, back in the 40's/50's. Salsa came along a lot later. So, the "New York" style salsa is nothing but the old Mambo. The dance actually looks better than Salsa because of the hold on the 1 beat, just like Cha Cha done correctly looks better than those who do "Texas style" cha cha with the rock on the down beat. IF done correctly, the hold (or cha Cha) is done on the "fan" of the music where it is natural. The Salsa dance holds on the fan, and truthfully, looks like you should be doing something when you are not. Hope this helps.

Something about "on-2" people should know:
I had a hard time dancing on 2 after learning on 1. On 1 dancers have this problem because they are trying to dance 234 678, instead of on the clave. The clave is that little clicks sound in a Salsa song (caused by the hitting of 2 sticks). Clave can be a 2-3 pattern or 3-2 pattern.

2-3: Clicks go on counts 2, 3, 5, &, 8
3-2: 1, &, 4, 6, 7

Dancing on 2 is more like dancing on clave. It makes it easier to hear the steps instead of count them.

It is referred to as Mambo, because Mambo is dance similar to Salsa in all ways except that you dance on 234, 678.

Salsa on 1
Salsa on 2 - Mambo
Salsa on 2 - Dancing on clave
Although I do not think Mambo and Clave can be interchanged as much.

Mambo is mambo, salsa is salsa, but the steps are very similar, and they are danced to a very similar music.

I don't think it is the same though.
