Ditto what Craig S said, especially the part about pain coming from other parts of your body. This is so true! I would also like to encourage you to definitely see your doctor for a diagnosis if you have not already done that. To add to the ice answer, generally ice is used in acute injuries...during the first 24 to 48 hours after the injury occurred. I usually advise the RICE treatment for the first 48+/- hours(RICE=rest, ice, compression, elevation). After that, alternating heat and cold every 20 minutes for a couple of days will increase blood and lymph flow in the area encouraging healing. For chronic pain, heat is the norm as long as there is no inflammation present(indicated by redness, swelling and the area feeling hot). Never use heat over a topical ointment such as BenGay etc. If you don't have time for the ice/heat treatment, I recommend Biofreeze, Tiger Balm or an Arnica rub. Again, do not apply heat to these.
As far as this being a muscle catch, some people refer to a sprain as such. Technically speaking a sprain is when a ligament(connective tissue that joins bone to bone) is over-stretched or torn. I wish you the best of health and God bless.

Try a heating pad for 20 minutes followed immediately by ice for another 20 minutes. Keep alternating this over and over. For some reason the heat and cold can cause the muscle to release. It works!Plus take motrin 600 mg which is like 3 regular sized ones every 6 hours.

So, Gemini~~~Marie gave a great answer. I would also like to recommend that if you haven't already done so, it might be a good idea to see a Dr, just to rule out any serious problems. If there are none, do what Gemini suggested along with some regular massage. Be sure to ask the massage therapist to work the whole body. It may seem crazy, but sometimes problems in remote and seemingly unconnected areas of our bodies can cause pain and suffering in far distant areas.
Good Luck! I hope you feel well soon!

it sounds like you are talking about a pulled muscle-try putting ICE on it for about 20 minutes-no longer than that-than leave it off for about 30 minutes-and put it on again-
some people prefer heat over ice-but i have had major neck problems-and found that ice worked alot better for instant relief.
to prevent it from happening-try to excersise your neck often-real easy -you can even do it ay work-move your head from side to side-stretching your neck muscles-and hold it on its side for 10-15 sec-repeat-to build up the back try stretching it out like a turtle coming out of its shell-and holding it for approx 3-4 sec's.
your trezpesius muscle runs over your shoulders and to the back of your neck-and can be extremely painful-preventing you from even lifting your arms up-when constantly overworked.
its important to stretch-stretch-stretch-thats the best "for preventative" measure-and it only takes seconds !!!
i hope this has helped a little
