Actually each year NASA is allocated a budget of about 15 billion dollars. This is quite tiny when compared to the amount that the USA spends on really pointless things. For example, out of a gross domestic product of 12.3 trillion dollars the government spends about 3 trillion, and while about 45% of that is spent on docial security and medicaid a huge amout is wasted. The general population are just as wasteful as the government. They spend about 30 billion a year on their pets, about 20 billion per year on toys, almost 60 billion per year on alcohol and almost 600 billion a year on gambling. Perhaps you think the government should spend more money on helping the poor or the disabled or to fight AIDS and so on, but do you seriously think that if they stopped funding NASA they would actually spend more money on social programmes?

This is an answer I posted on another person's question, which was same as yours:

What makes us different from the animals? our brain, and its our developed brain that got us to ask the question, "what is out there?"

True I am with you on something, before focusing on the universe, we should focus on making this world a better place, instead of destroying it.

But you must admit, when you look to the night sky, many questions infiltrate you mind. And of course the biggest question of all, "Where did it all come from?" This Astronomy stuff is very interesting. We are like moss growing on a rock, orbeting around this GIGANTIC hot ball with extreem speeds, with BILLIONS upon BILLIONS or other stars forming a galaxy, all rotating around the galactic center which is a super-massive black hole sucking matter in it.

Of course it doesnt stop there, there is the question of life on other planets, the big bang, the fate of the univers, black holes, quasars, supernova, nebula.... many things out there which could be the answer.

Here's an interesting fact:
The farthest known galaxy is (in NANO-metres, 1millionth of a mm):
One-Hundred Twenty-Nine Decillion, One-Hundred Eighty-Five Nonillion, Two-Hundred Eighty Octillion nanometres away.
129,185,280,000,000,000,000,00...

So yes, I say learning about the universe would be wonderful

The word "stupid" is rather misplaced. It is nor stupid, nor wasted: it is the culmination of our need to know, need to understand our universe.
However, I do agree on the fact that we could divide our ressources better, ie use less money for weapons, wars, politics etc, and make our world a better place. Both can be done (improve our world AND learning our uniiverse).
The budget of the armies is FAR superior to the NASA budget...

I don't think I'd call it stupid.

"The earth is the cradle of mankind - one cannot remain in the cradle forever" -- Konstantin Tsiolkovsky

It's in the nature of humans to explore realms not yet known or understood... well some humans anyway.

Whether NASA spend too much money or not is another question altogether but sending machines and humans into space is never going to be cheap.

Stupid space travel is pointless.

Clever space travel, on the other hand, has many benefits.

They're trying to find a way off the planet so when people like you destroy it they will no longer be here.
