If the earth didn't rotate on its axis, the half of the earth facing the sun would probably grow too hot to sustain life, and the backside would both freeze and never be able to support any sort of life due to the lack of light anyway. Probably a billion other effects, too.

Everyone has it wrong...if the Earth does not rotate at all, then a day would be exactly as long as the year. Half the year would be daytime, and half the year would be nighttime.

Those who mistakenly said that one side would always face the sun are wrong...that is only true if the Earth "rotates" once per year. The moon is "tidally locked" to Earth, one side always faces us....but that does not mean the moon doesn't rotate, it rotates once for every time it goes around the Earth.

No rotation would have many catastrophic effects - there will be no gravity for starters and the atmoshere would escape like on Mars, but we would already be dead because the rotation of the earth powers our protection from the solar winds (Van Allen Belt?)so we would be toast.
So many bad things would occur hypothetically it's hard to list what would happen if the earth started to slow down even by a tiny amount.
Has the Earth always spun at the same speed anyway?

The half facing the Sun would be baked and the dark half would freeze.
All life would end.
Plants would not survive on the light side for a number of reasons, mainly because the temperature would be too high, but also because plants do actually require a dark period to survive.
Another thing that might happen would be that the oceans would boil and fill the air with clouds and thus would block out all light to the planet.
Much like the atmosphere on Venus.

1) only half the planet will grow, since the other half never get any sunlight

2) the climate will change definitely, since there're no more fluctuation in temperature, air preassure, etc between regions

3) the electromagnetic field will be affected [negatively] greatly. if u understand the basic of electromagnetic field's theory then u know what i mean.

4) all the movement in the universe will be affected, and possibly collapse and we're all die!!!!
