I would like to understand once forever what is the difference made by:
4 sets of 6 reps each - 40kg
4 sets of 14 reps each - 26 kg
This is just an example, I would like to understand the concept. I know that you shouldn't go on for more than 4-6 weeks with the same program, etc. I just want to know muscle wise the effects of such difference.
Thanks!

Light weights and many reps will give you a more cut look. Heavy weights and less reps give you bulk.

I'm certain some body builder or personal trainer will give you the best answer to your question. But until then, here is what I was taught:

You lift heavy weights with minimal reps for building quick explosive strength.

You lift light weights with a lot of reps for building endurance.

Note I said that was what I was taught. It doesn't mean that it's correct.

more reps = stamina, more wieght = power, it's a good idea to combine power and stamina sets on the muscle groups as part of your work out -eg work on arms on a power lift set. then do legs then back to arms on stamina or variation on combo theme exercise rest exercise in different ways, but its important to give each muscle group a rest between sets so it can recover

I think using heavy weights is to build more muscle, and using lighter weights is to tone.
