Ok, from a Cobalt owner...I bought my Cobalt last year. Currently have 41000 miles on it, great gas milege, rides quiet like a much bigger car. As with any brand new model, there are growing pains, which for me, was only the problem with the wiring harness for the air conditioner.

The Cavalier was getting old, and GM/Chevrolet recognized the need for a redesign. Other cars had passed the Cavalier in terms of economy, looks, and features. The Cobalt has received good reviews, and is GM's #7 seller last year (yourcobalt.com).

Toyota has no 'Cavalier'. My son has the 2004 Pontiac Sunfire, which is basically the Cavalier with the Pontiac logos. (Keep in mind, Chevrolet and Pontiac are divisions of GM).

Note: I had a 1992 Toyota Corolla with over 432000 miles on it before I turned it in for the Cobalt.

I am one of the LUCKIEST PEOPLE ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH for many reasons, but one of the most obvious is the vehicle I was blessed with -- a bright-red 4-door 2002 Cavalier sedan, the COOLEST CAR IN THE WORLD! I LOVE my Cavy with a capitol "L" because it's the epitome of everything a car should be -- beautiful, comfortable, and fuel efficient! In fact, I pity the millions not fortunate enough to be driving one since to me, there are 3 types of automobiles: 1. Cavaliers (Chevy or Toyota), 2. Non-Cavaliers (all others unlike it), & 3. Cavalier-Wanna-Be's (Pontiac Sunfire, Ford Escort, etc.). However, as enamored as I am with the Chevy Cavalier, it seems the company did not share my belief -- they discontinued it last year for an ugly piece of junk called a Cobalt! Why would they stop making the car that should be featured in the dictionary by the word "automobile" because it's the model of everything a car should be? Cobalts SUCK in comparison to Cavaliers!!! Nothing is as good as the Chevy Cavalier!!!

The Cobalt is not a remade Cavalier.
The Cobalt is an Opel Astra, the old design already out of production in Europe.

In Canada and Mexico they have a Pontiac one called G5 Pursuit and G4.

The Cavalier-Sunfire were under average cars extremly old, since the model start been build since 1995.

The correct answer is, save your money and buy a Cavalier. They're cheaper, easier to work on, and get great mileage. The Cobalt is basically a slightly higher-performance rework of the Cavalier, and some people have experienced problems with them. Plus, if you shop around and you are selective, you can find a nice quality, like new Cav with low miles, that's basically like buying a new car...plus you'll save $ because someone else has already eaten the depreciation.

Good Luck
