This isn't the first time that it happened! Back in the sixties, there was an issue where the Superman Revenge Squad ( a bunch of aliens that hated his guts for stopping their crimes before) planned to get their revenge in Superman.
The SRS figured that since Kryptonite rays were energy, they could make a radio transmitter that put out Kryptonite rays and blanket Metropolis with the rays. They sent an assassin to Earth, training him to kill Superman by using an android programmed to act like Superman would.
When the alien assassin got to Earth and set up his transmitter, Superman couldn't figure out where the Kryptonite radiation was coming from, and got too weak to fly out of range, and died.
The assassin took his body back with him to his planet to show it off. But the android (which had not been destroyed) felt sympathy for Superman and reversed the test device, which drew the Kryptonite radiation out of Superman's body, then he returned to life! The android died because the device had an unexpected effect on him.
But the bad guys weren't done yet. They used a scientific device to disintegrate all the books and records on their planet. Then their leader, who had copies of all the destroyed books, used a terrorist tactic: he demanded that elections be held between him and the leader of the opposition party (who had no grudge against Superman) for the rule of their world. Everybody knew that the bad guys were holding the entire wold hostage, threatening to plunge them into a dark age of ignorance and let their civilization collapse. This was something that Superman could not prevent.
So they had to let the elections begin; but then a vigilante group attacked the bad guys' headquarters. Superman joined in to try to prevent them getting killed. When the leader of the bad guys saw that Superman was still alive, he set off an incendiary device which destroyed the last remaining books of history, medicine law and science.
But now that Superman knew where the books were, he used his x ray vision and super speed to read all the books before they could burn! And then he programmed a computer at super speed to print them out again, so that their records and civilization and everything was not lost.
So the bad guys were put in jail, the leader of the vigilantes (the opposition party) was elected as the world leader, and the android was enshrined in the tomb that had been meant for Superman.
I think this was the first time that they actually killed Superman and brought him back. It may have been the first time that they killed off any major comic book character and brought him back, leading to all the clones, alien duplicates, and parallel world stories we have today, as ways of returning characters that have been killed off that the readers wanted back.
The above story is also interesting in that it was all in one issue! Today, it would last at least three or four issues, and lead to plot lines that would last for a year or two. But those were simpler times.

Because a new villian named Doomsday "killed" him. In an issue shortly after, Jonathan Kent had a near death experience and convinced Supes he wasn't dead. With his return that made four superman {Steel, Superman (with no powers, carrying a gun, and dressed in black, a cyborg, another kryptonian, and a half grown clone}.

Because Superman is an iconic character who will outlive us all, and having him 'die' and be reborn is one way to keep the material fresh.
Also, it made DC a lot of money.
