You can find cheap apartments for under $1,000. It would be nice if you researched ahead of time so you know where to go and what to do. If possible, contact a local real estate agent and ask them if they know anything about Houston.

If I am reading this question correctly you are coming to Houston with just $1000 and want to be able to live and find a job on that amount of money. If you were lucky enough to find an apartment for less than $500 (that would be rent, deposit, app. fee., utilities fees) it wouldn't be in a great area of town. Hopefully you will have your own transportation, gas is running about $2.90 a gallon. Chances of finding a great paying job (and you didn't state a profession), that will cover your expenses the first week you are here is gonna be slim to none. Then you have to worry about food, and emergencies. You need a better plan. Do your research in the links listed in previous answers, have a "REAL" job lined up (not a strong possibility of) and try to find an apartment close to work. If you do come to Houston and your plan doesn't work out, we have plenty of shelters, because this town is full of people who came here on a whim looking for a fresh start. We have a whole group of Katrina evacuees that are still struggling to get on their feet almost a year after they were forced from their homes. They had lots of help from FEMA, the Red Cross, and generous. Where is your support system?

Moving to TX on $1,000 is definitely do able...you won't be in the best section of town, but it wouldn't be the worst either. Many of the apartments run a $99 move in which would take care of your rent for a month. THen you have the bus system and park and ride that you can use for like $2 or $3 a day to help you save gas. The only tricky part is learning your way around. And don't trust ppl down here to quickly either! I moved down here last year and had to find that out on my own...city view apartments are on the north side of houston and have affordable places with nice amenities, as well as several others in the area. Also, post your resume on monster, or career builder.com and you can start looking for a job down here from wherever you are. Hope that helps, if you want to do it and are a "survivor" you'll make it, I did...let me knowif you need any more advice...hope i helped.

Man, you're really cutting it close!
Usually apartments will ask for at least a $300 deposit, $25-$50 application fee. Then you have to put up additional deposits for your utilities. If you check with an apartment locator they might be able to find you some apartments running specials of no app fees, or $99 deposits.
Rent will depend where you decide to live. Inner city is really booming right now and even though the apartments arent that great, they will not be below $500, and im talking efficiencies here. In the suberbs, you're looking at $450-$600 for a 1 bdrm, but you have lots of nice amenities.
Here are a couple of locators you can check with:

I can think of better places to live. I lived in Houston for a few months in 2003. Its too hot, too dangerous.
I am British but have spent a lot of time in and around the US. Give me Wyoming anyday.......the pace of life is slower, the climate more bearable and the people are friendlier and I felt less threatened.
The Telephone Road area is a cheap place to stay but I wouldn't advise it. That area freaked me out.

First thing to do is not sign a lease, just stay in an extended stay motel, until you get a job.
I suggest looking for a job in the westheimer area of town for the highest pay in Houston.
Check with Human resorces for job assistance.
