Department for Education and Skills.
DfES numbers are allocated to trainee teachers at the beginning of their Teacher Training or PGCE course. Not all of these will go on to be awarded Qualified Teacher Status. DfES numbers are also allocated to some of those who work as instructors or unqualified teachers.
The GTC has established a Register of teachers with Qualified Teacher Status. This is the first time that such a register has been compiled. Holding a place on the Register guarantees each teacher’s qualification.

What's a DFES number?
I'm a newly qualified teacher and have been told by the agency I'm joining that I need a DFES number- what is it and how do I get one?

Your course leader or tutor should be able to help you with this. Your DFES no is simply a registration number. You could try contacting them - I think you have to register - it's so long ago, I've forgotten.

You do indeed need to be a qualified teacher. Or I think they might issue you one if you are undergoing teacher training, but I can't quite remember from when I trained.

This is your GTC number - it comes on a purple card and should have been sent to you as part of the GTC pack during your course.
If you don't have it, contact the GTC who will be able to help.

You should get it when you recieve your PGCE certificate. All teachers have to have one to work, it proves you qualified.
Good luck with your career!
