Buy an I Pod for trend factor for a 7 year old as they perhaps do not have as much to download and would want the trademark goodies that go with it. But MP3s have more capacity and availability which are appreciated by teenagers looking to download and share music.

well to tell you the truth ipods have more accessories for them than any other player due to their enormous popularity but as for a reason to get one or the other would be what do you plan on using it for. Ipods lack a few features that one might like to have such as fm radio built in or a voice recorder. but if you want simple mini games the ipod has things like solitaire. Another thing to consider is what format is your music in? If it's all in MP3 you could go with either but if most of your music is in .WMA you would want a player that can play that format natively without being converted because it will essentially give you a duplicate copy of the same song in a different format so the ipod can understand it. Thus taking up unnecessary space on your computer. If you own a cell phone it would be best to get one that has mp3 player built in as less bulk. As for your space issue what will you be doing with it? will you be running around doing vigorous activity with it or will you be mostly siting still or just walking with it. This is important to know because the largest have hard drives which can fail with excessive shock. My recommendation would be a SanDisk Sansa e200 series. It's small light but can store up to 8GB of data, plus it has a MIcroSD slot so you can add an additional 2 GB of storage if you need it. This is a lot of space more than most use for music on their own computer so you should be able to fit most if not all of your music on this unit.

MP3 player is what they're all called. iPod is the brand name for the ones made just by Apple.
Well, most iPods will be have much more storage than your child needs. So why spend the extra money if you don't have to...
I suggest you get the "iPod Shuffle" or the "Creative Zen Nano". These come in a few different sizes. "512MB" will hold about 125 songs, and "1GB" will hold about 250 songs.
These players are cheap - they ought to cost somewhere between $100 and $170usd. (I am Canadian.)

MP3,...7yrs old??? IPOD is just a brand name. MP3's are more user friendly, I have a Zen Neeon & San Disk sansa,... I have not heard anyone with an IPOD that is happy.
IPOD is not the best on the market, and MP3 players sound quality is sooo much better.

I love my sony mp3 player I chose not to have ipod because their prices for the same thing are much higher. True i am looking in the 20g range but 20g ipads cost now what my sony did 11 months ago. I feel you are paying for the ipod name, saying thay my cuson can play cards and store pics on his which i cant do so if you want the features get the ipod if you just want music i would suggest you look at other brands

iPod for young kids?
Probably goes boom after a while......
You probably should get him an Mp3 Player (Flash Based) with lower memory but with a Flash Card Slot to increase the memory when it's full.
Don't give him an iPod. Battery will DIE and the Mini Hard Disk will explode!

iPod is an MP3 player. Difference is that iPod however is the best mp3 player on the market for now when you consider sound quality, ease usage and an intuitive navigation interface.

i would buy rather from creative as it can be easly used as usb-zip you can store there something more than data, and to IPOD you have to convert mp3 to files of Apple, to Creative you dont have to,
i think that mp3 player is better.
anyway becouse of Apples music format i would not chose IPOD, i have sony and it has own music format too, and its terrible.
