it's a good question.

War as we know it is not quite the same as the people of '39-45 knew it. The Second World War was not much different to the Great War with the exception of less trench warfare.

That said, the technology that was developed during WWII has enabled us to move forward with devestating effect and pace. Just look at the technology out there today - Air Power being the most surpressive factor in any war... that said, there is always the need for ground offensive so anybody with any tactical knowledge will know that Air Warfare is all about Surpression and Air Dominance.

War will essentially never change, but the scale can.

If WWIII is not here already, the we are all in for a huge shock when it does arrive.

Personally I don't think it will be a contest unless Europe and tnew new eastern states in the Baltics decide to side with the instigator of it all... but let's not forget... WW I was caused by the assasination of a Bosnian by a Serb, and that war was all about the same thing we see today in that part of the world.

WWII was caused by one man trying to eradicate the world of anything he seen unfit to walk the planet. - we all know how that turned out and who took advantage of what.

WWIII is something that we may very well be experiencing right now. Who is to say that the third great war will be fought on battle fields, the day of information technology, the www and more developed and favoured tactics of battle mean that this war could be going on rightunder noses...

the governments of today are oblivious to what's going on behind the curtains and who is pulling the strings... I think the right arm marrionette string on Bush has broken... I don't see the finger pointing too much anymore... maybe Cheney has forgotten how to work it...

God help us if the Nukes are used... we're all fucked so.

Find a website that shows you all the "small wars" going on right now. Decide if you think these all add up to a big war.
Also you can look at statistics of how many are dying in the wars since 1945, and compare that with how many died in WW1 and WW2. You need to include destruction of infrastructure too, cos that causes more death and hardship after they stop fighting.

"Economic war" - perhaps we can call it corporate or national selfishness /greed - also causes much death and destruction. You may like to add those deaths and see if you think these kinds of "wars" are big or not.
Some media and some governments like to make people think the wars going on now are smaller than they are - or bigger!
Something that hits us like WW1 and WW2? I hope not, because it would be much much bigger than them Who can say?

the existence of the nuclear bomb means that if there is a WW3, then there won't be a WW4... So, assuming that powerful leaders want to live to be able to spend all the money they got while leading their countries, then you can't expect someone like that to start a WW3...

So, I say only small wars, with the USA crushing small and defenseless countries.

World wars as we know them are basically extinct i think cos we are never going to fight like we used to what with new technologies etc etc! i think its bascially east against west and depending on who has more money and power in the world (you've guessed it) depends on who gets more support! it is impossible to for Iraq and places to do anything but these terrorist strikes because they have no breathing space!
